And, 2003 was as triumphant as 2002 as the tribe was again awarded as champion. In the year 2003, the tribe has achieved the grandslam for winning the championship trophy during this year. The tribe featured the "Ati's" crude way of life and fought for survival. They learned that strong faith in the deity most often leads to successful endeavors in life.In dinagyang 2004, Lava from volcanic eruption was featured in the dinagyang ati tribe competition. It displayed the suffering of the "Ati's" but strong faith in the maker helped them survive the ordeal. The tribe won the third place. But in the Kasadyahan, the tribe garnered champion.2005, the Paghidaet tribe stopped joining the competition for two years for lack of major sponsors and financial constraints, which could sustain the tribes expenses. However, the tribe did join in the Kasadyahan 2006 competition, and was proclaimed 1st runner-up, best in street dancing, and best in discipline awards. In december 2006, the tribe management, headed by the principal, decided to join the dinagyang 2007 through the full support of the PTCA, teachers, and benevolent sponsors. In 2007, tribu Paghidaet was judged 1st runner-up with the following awards: best in music, best in street dancing, best in choreography, and best in choreographer (Mr. Ramil C. Dinagyang Festival: Best Tourism events in the Philippines

Dinagyang is celebrated to commemorate Christianization of the natives and to honor the patron saint Sto. Niño or Holy Child Jesus. It is a very colorful parade coupled with a dramatization in honor of the patron Saint Sto. Niño as the object of dramatized offerings and prayers amidst the cracking of drums and shouts of “Viva Señor Santo Niño.” It has its beginnings in 1969, and was casually called “Iloilo Ati-Atihan” to differentiate it Aklan’s Ati-atihan. It was only in 1977 when the term “Dinagyang” was used, coined by an old-time Ilonggo writer and radio broadcaster, the late Pacifico Sumagpao Sudario.
Dinagyang is an exclusive Iloilo (in Panay Island in the Visayas region) festival akin to the Sinulog of Cebu. I remember that the main festival is celebrated every 4th Sunday of January. Prior to the main festivity is the Kasadyahan which takes place on Saturday. It is at this time of the year when the streets of Iloilo is filled with young and old alike to enjoy nightly “open-air” dining and beer drinking. There are particular streets in downtown Iloilo where food stalls and some restaurants are set up temporarily for the revelry. I personally love the smell of barbecued/grilled fish and meat in the air. So I grab every chance when someone asks “upod ka? ma-Dagyang ta!” (You want to go with us? Let’s go Dagyang — meaning to enjoy –)

On the day of the Dinagyang, over the years I have already declined watching Dinagyang on the streets, preferring to watch on television to have a better view minus the scorching sun. It is televised live in the local TV's but not on national broadcasts. They only give snippets of the festivities.

As to who are involved, Dinagyang has become a fierce competition of different “tribes” from schools and towns in Iloilo. The warriors of La Paz National High School with the name Tribu Paghidaet have dominated the competition for years. In fact if I am not mistaken, there was a time they have participated only to showcase and not to compete to give chance to other tribes. The strong rivalry has made the festival more colorful with each tribe eager to have the best costume and the best moves.

Striving for Excellence: not Starving Wannabes!

To Student who’s do not quite get it. Excellence is not about always saying “YES”. Excellence also means by saying “NO”. Excellence is most likely achieved through setting up specific goals and objectives for you to focus, prioritize, and excel in, rather than spreading yourself thin by joining all contest, all clubs, and organizations there is. Likewise, neither do some teachers quite get this.
And to Teachers who resort (unless unavoidable) to compulsory participation fail to realize that this only teaches obedience on the part of the students. whereas, encouraged voluntary participation develops a sense of freedom of choice, which is concominant to making wise decisions, as well as obedience. Excellence in teaching is achieved through guiding students towards liberty, not through some form of institutionalized “slavery”.

Parental Guidance: Must be suggested!

We think that pressures to loose conduct are strong. Children must not advised to see such ads and commercials. We also know that the youth today are easily influenced by violent and sexual commercials and ads. Provocative sex symbols underlie much advertising. As a youth myself, i can feel the ways that my fellow youths may feel upon seeing this. And for us, it’s not good. Other my like it, but for us, it’s not adviseable. We just feel that we must not abuse freedom of expression too much, because something that too much is bad. And we must also know as a youth that sex is sacred and we are not adviseable to do this thing. Stop those stupid curiosity about sex and just focus in the studies. remember regrets always in the end.
